Portugal as a Holiday Destination
Portugal's most southern province, the
Algarve, is the most visited part of Portugal
and no wonder - it has some beautiful stretches of
coast, a good climate, with hot summers and plenty
of winter sun and has been developed to offer the
summer holiday maker and golfers all that they
need. But there is much more to explore.
The mountains of the north with forests and
rivers and the sparsely populated plains of the
south offer contrast to the coast. Vines are grown
in many parts of Portugal. Portugal has a culture
influenced by its invaders of the past and the
explorers who left its shores.
The Atlantic coast
North of Porto it is known as the Costa Verde,
south Costa de Prata; the whole area around the
mouth of the River Tejo is known as Costa de Lisboa
with Cascais and Estoril to the north of the river
and Caparica, Sesimbra and Setubal to the south,
(Costa Azul); further south are the deserted beaches
of the Alentejo; and then the Algarve is reached.
The Wines
The green wines of Costa Verde; the well known
Port; Dão - from the mountains; Bairrada - as you
travel back south; Estremadoura - as you head for
Lisbon and the wines from the southern Alentejo
plains - and if you have not heard of all of these
and enjoy good wines a wine tour of Portugal has a
lot to offer.
The Architecture and Built Features
If visiting castles appeal to you try working
your way down the eastern side of Portugal - Spain
lies beyond. Further exploration of Portugal
reveals the legacies of other visitors - the moorish
influence can easily be seen and the tradition of
using decorative tiles remains.
Places of Special Interest
If you have plenty of time a tour of central and
southern Portugal might include Lisbon, Sintra,
Obidos, Fatima, Coimbra, Viseu and a journey through
the Serra da Estrela, Évora, a journey across the
plains of Alentejo to the Algarve and then back
north through Monchique. |
