Santo da Serra
Home of the Madeira Open for many years, this is a fantastic 27 hole complex designed by Robert Trent Jones, some 2000+ Feet above sea level.
The views cover an array of verdant valleys, coastal villages and islands and are nothing short of glorious.
The Machico and Desertas nines are the Championship course, while the Serra 9 was added more recently. The course has a veritable smorgasbord of fantastic, challenging and fundamentally fair golf holes with changes of elevation and even altitude requiring careful club selection.
Hole 3 and 4 on Machico will live long in the memory. While the rest of the course runs over and around the mountainside’s lush vegetation and mature trees.
The skill of Trent Jones is highlighted by the options available for less able golfers and the challenges set before the more confident golfers and the fact that there are relatively few steep climbs.
A must play!
"Santo da Serra golf course is in excellent conditions and not crowded at all, which makes it a pleasure to play there. It is challenging enough for good golfers, not to be recommended for beginners. Staff is very helpful, flexible and friendly and shuttle service back to the hotel works very well. It is a pleasure to play there, we will certainly be back."

"The course was in wonderful condition, and a memorable experience to play. Our driver to the course was excellent - couldnt have asked for a more informed and intelligent person to make the golfing and visit to the Island something to behold."
